How is alopecia different from regular hair loss?

Although regular balding is described as Androgenetic Alopecia, the term ‘Alopecia’ usually describes a specific cause of hair loss, not connected to standard hair loss. Alopecia is very common and takes many forms, however effective treatment is available at our clinic in Houston.

The most common type is alopecia areata, seen as patchy hair loss affecting a small area at first, but often becoming more aggressive and affecting a much larger area of the scalp. Alopecia areata sometimes progresses to alopecia totalis, or hair loss of the entire head, including the eyebrows, eyelashes and any facial hair.

Traction alopecia is also common, especially among women, caused by long term wearing of tight hairstyles that pull the hair and eventually damage the follicles.

Other forms also occur including telogen effluvium, anagen effluvium and postpartum hair loss. For this reason, alopecia should be professionally diagnosed by a suitably qualified individual.
